Butcher block countertops bring the timeless beauty of natural wood into your kitchen, island, or bathroom. Crafted from hardwood species like maple, walnut, cherry, and oak, they add warmth and character no manufactured material can replicate.
Butcher block pairs beautifully with quartz or stone, and many homeowners use it on their island while choosing stone for perimeter counters. With proper care and regular oiling, it can last for decades, and unlike stone or laminate, it can be sanded and refinished if scratches or stains occur.

Prevent stains by cleaning up spills immediately.
To remove them, pour salt over the stain and rub with a slice of lemon.
Alternatively, cover the stain with baking soda and scrub.
Bleach can be diluted with water and applied to the stain, but may discolour the wood.
As a last resort for deeper stains, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain, then re-oil. Avoid leaving standing water on butcher block surfaces, as prolonged moisture can cause warping or darkening.
To oil your butcher block countertop, apply a generous coat of food-safe mineral oil or a dedicated butcher block conditioner using a clean cloth, rubbing it evenly into the surface in the direction of the wood grain.
Allow the oil to absorb for at least two to four hours, or ideally overnight, then wipe away any excess.
We recommend oiling a new butcher block countertop monthly for the first year, then every three to six months after that to keep the wood nourished and protected.
Yes — butcher block is one of the only countertop materials that is safe to cut on directly.
The hardwood surface won’t dull your knives and can be sanded smooth if cut marks accumulate over time.
That said, we still advise that you use a cutting board to help extend the life of the finish and keep the surface looking its best for longer.
With proper care and maintenance, butcher block countertops can last 20 years or more.
Unlike stone or laminate, butcher block can be sanded and refinished if it becomes scratched or stained, essentially giving you a brand new surface without replacing the countertop.
Regular oiling is the key to keeping the wood nourished and protected long-term.
Yes — butcher block is generally one of the more affordable countertop options compared to quartz and granite, making it a popular choice for homeowners who want a natural, high-end look without the stone price tag.
It’s also a smart choice for kitchen islands where you want a contrasting material alongside stone perimeter counters.
For long-term care, regularly oil the surface with a food-safe oil, like mineral or walnut oil. Combine with beeswax to fill fissures from wear and tear. Beeswax also helps prevent your Butcher Block from drying out or cracking.
Butcher Block is made from wood and burns under heat. If burnt, it can be sanded out.
If Butcher Block is scratched, it can discolour, so protect it from knives and sharp edges.
Coffee, tea, juices and even water can stain Butcher Block if spills aren’t cleaned up immediately.
Oil or condition Butcher Block regularly to protect the surface and extend its life.
